Rolling Along

One of the beauties of great art is that it's ambiguous. It doesn't have to be deliberately so. We just project our anxieties upon it.

Pictures (and hence, logically film) are famously neutral. One of the greatest tricks is said to be attributed to Eisenstein.

Show a balloon and then a child's face and you will see the child as happy. Show an ice-cream cone dropped on the floor and the same child's face and you will perceive it to be unhappy.

Nothing has changed about the face just the context.

This is one of Sondheim's best musicals and this song occupies an odd position within it.

It's in a major key and in an upbeat tempo ending with hammered major chords all upbeat. In context, it's all very depressing but it's easy to see why a young person would perceive it differently.

The New Year will be soon be here — what lies ahead?
