When I was young, I used to watch my grandparents and parents obsessively evaluate the value of gifts so that they could reciprocate at the same level.
This has always struck me as both macabre and morally wrong.
For me, this violates the principle of a "gift".
Gifts should be freely given with no expectations attached.
If you can't afford something, learn how to say, "I'm sorry but I can't afford that." After all, I would never want a friend to go into debt or something because of me. (What kind of friend would I be otherwise?)
